1. Artificial Intelligence in Power Engineering:

The goal of introduction of AI in equipment or software is to produce a machine or a system that simulate or emulate a human being’s intelligence. AI consists of few sub-fields. Apart from those related to pattern recognition, natural language processing, it covers the fields of expert system, neural networks, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms. The last four techniques, found an increasing number of applications in industry in general and in power engineering field in specific(1). In 1988, the first symposium on the application of expert system in power systems was held in Stockholm. In 1991, the  International  Forum on Applications of Neural Networks to Power Systems was held in Washington.

1. IT in Education:
Computers have been around now for about half a century. It has pentrated almost all aspects of life. It has been used in research since its early years. However its efficient use in education has  taken momentum  only in the recent years. The introduction of pre-computer age technology , such as films, radio, TV and audio visual aids had touched education only slightly. The vast majority of schools, universities and other educational institutions continued to  use traditional methods before the introduction of computers and computer networks . With the wide spread of the  connection to word wide web, cheap personal computers, vast amount of disk space available, availability of CD-Rom Drives, possibility of installation of local area networks and the alike are all lending themselves to the help of schools , universities, other training and educational institutions as well as the possibility of education at home by the student himself using his PC directly or as a mean for connection to the internet. The amount of courseworks , educational materials, software and other aids for learning available on the internet is increasing rapidly(1). However the web is not yet suitable for learning. Learning is in general still costly, slow and contains a lot of gaps. (2)

ABSTRACT

The aim of the program described here is to provide the students taking the course of electric machines with an on line information and tutorial which help them during the course of their study. The program contains textbook materials in a lively manner. This encourages the student to follow up the explanations in an interesting , easy to follow, self explanatory and step by step manner.

The program consists of four modules: Transformer module , winding module, dc machines module and ac machines module. The first one was written in C-Language  , while the other three modules were programmed using Visual Basic.

It was found that the Visual Basic is quite suitable for such a problem. The four modules were integrated under one package using Visual Basic.

The program was developed over a period of more than 3 years by students in their final year study under the two semesters final year project course . The program is still under test before full implementation along with course work.

1. Introduction:

Lotfi Zadeh(1) is widely considered now as the first scientist to introduce the theory of fuzzy sets in 1965 although Max Black(2)  had presented a paper on the theory back in 1937. Development of the fuzzy set theory has since 1965 been dramatic. Thousands of publications are now available about the basics of the fuzzy set theory as well as its applications.

Kandel(3)  in 1982 gave a comprehensive bibliography of the theory.

In standard set theory, an object in either a member of a set or not. There is no in between. Traditional logics are based in the notions that P(a) is true as long as a is a member of the set belonging to class P and false otherwise.

In fuzzy set theory the degree of membership varied between 0 and 1 as will be described later.
